The Soofies Decide to Marry
The Soofies began discussing marriage in late 2022. Somewhat naively, they thought they could just sign up for a wedding appointment on the Standesamt (civil registry office) website. Little did they know they would be called in for an in-person appointment and handed a 17-page checklist of documents they would need to submit in order to "prove" their wedding eligibility... and that Little Soofy would have to get all of her documentation from the U.S. Apostille'd and translated into German...Three months later, the Soofies finally returned to the Standesamt, Apostille'd and translated documents from Florida and Maryland in hand! Little Soofy's U.S. documents were sent off to a high court in Hamm for one last approval before a wedding date could be set. And alas, one month later, the approval finally arrived! According to Standesamt policy the Soofies had six months to marry from the date of the approval, and they chose July 25th, 2023 both because it was almost exactly one year before the date of their party (they had already begun planning it at this point 🙃) and because it is an auspicious day to get married according to the Chinese calendar, which Little Soofy's mom looked up for them.
